Kelly Ripa Says Shannen Doherty Got a Raw Deal in Last Chat

Ripa, 53, had Shannen Doherty on her podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera,” just weeks before Doherty passed away in July after a long fight with breast cancer. Ripa recalls feeling “crushed” by how much Doherty’s health had worsened.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on September 10, the talk show host shared that she was always trying to set Shannen Doherty up with people. She also remembered a touching comment Doherty made during their last conversation.

Kelly Ripa shared that she had a sense of who might be a good match for Shannen Doherty. However, in their last conversation, Shannen told her, “I’m a tough sell because I don’t have much time left.”

“What really hit me was realizing that she knew her time was very short, and it crushed me,” Ripa said.

Kelly Ripa shared that Shannen Doherty talked about how brutal and painful her treatments were. While it might sound simple, knowing that Shannen is no longer in physical pain brings some comfort to those who knew and loved her.

Ripa also shared why it was so hard for her to cope with Doherty’s death.

“It was really hard for me because we’re the same age and grew up together. I always felt like she got the worst treatment in show business,” she said, adding that she still believes that and stands by her words.

During her career, Shannen Doherty was let go from Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed when both shows were at their peak.

In January, Shannen Doherty talked on her podcast, Let’s Be Clear, about how she was in a really tough marriage when she was let go from 90210. She mentioned that problems in her marriage made it hard for her to be punctual for work. (Doherty married Ashley Hamilton in October 1993 and got divorced in April 1994.)

Doherty admitted that her issues caused big problems for her costars because they had to wait for her, which meant they ended up working longer hours.

She said, “It was all my responsibility, but I really wish someone had sat me down and told me, ‘Here’s the deal: you’re going to be fired because we can’t deal with this anymore. We get that you have personal issues, but you need to separate that from work and get things together.’”

Shannen Doherty passed away at 53 on July 13 after a long fight with stage IV breast cancer.

Shannen Doherty has sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer. Her publicist, Leslie Sloane, shared that Shannen died on Saturday, July 13, surrounded by her family and her dog, Bowie. The family is asking for space to grieve privately.
