The Pro Football Hall of Famer and ESPN personality admitted that his Instagram wasn’t hacked. He accidentally shared a video of himself and a woman engaging in sexual activity to his millions of followers.
“I’m obviously embarrassed. I’m a very private person, and having one of my most personal moments – the audio – shared with the world is really upsetting for many reasons,” Sharpe admitted during a special episode of “Nightcap.”
“A lot of people expect me to always act professionally, and I try to, even in private. I’m really disappointed in myself—not for what I did, because plenty of adults do similar things—but because the audio was made public. I disappointed a lot of people.”
On Wednesday afternoon, a video surfaced on Instagram showing Shannon Sharpe in an intimate moment with an unidentified woman, whose voice could be heard in the background.
Clips shared on social media showed that thousands of people were watching the explicit live stream.
Response
At first, Sharpe said his Instagram was hacked in a post on X, but later deleted it. On Wednesday night, he admitted the incident happened because he wasn’t familiar with how the technology works.
Sharpe explained that his marketing partner, Jamie Fritz, was the one who finally got in touch to inform him about the situation, and someone else eventually stopped the live video.
“My phone wasn’t hacked, and it wasn’t a joke. It was just me being myself,” he said. “You thought I was faking it, but I was just staying active.”
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson mentioned that Sharpe isn’t great with technology, sharing that Sharpe has accidentally called him while his phone was in his pocket before.
Although Johnson tried to be understanding with Sharpe, he couldn’t resist bringing up how Sharpe had previously criticized his professionalism.
“I’m shocked. I never expected you to do something so out of character,” Johnson said. “It’s a bit unprofessional. I’m not angry, just really disappointed because I expect more from you, especially after you recently criticized me for the same thing. This has completely stunned me.”
While Sharpe tried to be serious at first, he and the others joked about the situation. Before the stream started, Sharpe also promoted a male enhancement product that sponsored the show.
